The Story Behind “While He Fights for Me”

It was the summer going into my junior year of high school when my world came crashing down. Having just received the news of an irreversible diagnosis that confirmed my symptoms, it left me both sad and confused. The sleepless nights in physical pain were just too much. I wrote in my journal that I felt abandoned and forgotten by God. I thought that He would make a miracle and that I wouldn’t have to journey down this road—it was a battle to remind myself of God’s faithful promises of how He never leaves His children alone and is with us in the fire.

One day in the midst of processing the news, I was having my quiet time with the Lord and reading in 2 Chronicles 20. Verse 17 stood out to me: "You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you…" Upon reading that verse, I said to the Lord, “That’s great that I don’t have to ‘fight this battle,’ but who is going to fight for me?” At that moment, K-LOVE radio was playing in the background, and the verse of the day was announced as Exodus 14:14 which says, "The Lord will fight for you; you have only to be still." What a beautiful way that the Lord speaks to His children and comforts them.

God used that verse not only to answer my prayer, but He laid such a burden on my heart for the message of Exodus 14:14. It sparked something in me that day. I knew I needed to write a song, and so “While He Fights for Me” was born. All the little details of how the Lord used different verses to inspire the lyrics like Psalms 62:2, Romans 8:37, Isaiah 40:29, or Proverbs 18:10, showed me how God was co-writing this with me from beginning to end. The Lord’s hand was even in the melody when I sat down on the piano to write the music. “While He Fights for Me” is not just about how God fights for us; it is also about how we have the responsibility to surrender our battles to God.

Surrendering can be difficult because it involves giving up control, and as humans, we often find a false sense of strength and comfort in maintaining that control. However, by letting God be in control of the situation and commanding our fears to be still before Him, it takes the pressure off of us to fight the battle. If we continue to remind ourselves of the promises of God that are true and continue to seek His will in prayer, then we have hope in the middle of our battle because He’s already won the war for us through His death and resurrection on the cross. Our hope is not in this earth but in eternity and in His perfect plan.

My hope is that you will be encouraged to stand firm in your battle and remind your soul today to be still while He fights for you.

Blessings,
